Thurs. Nov. 5th                   Today we will enjoy a full day tour of Kyoto including the Todaiji Temple to see Japan's largest Buddha, Deer Park - home to hundreds of freely roaming deer, and Kasuga Shrine - Nara's most celebrated shrine.

Due to its past as the first permanent capital of Japan, Nara remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples.

The park is home to hundreds of freely roaming deer. Considered messengers of the gods in Shinto, Nara's deer have become a symbol of the city and have even been designated a National Treasure.

The Todaiji Temple, constructed in the 8th century, is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples. In it's huge precincts are various national treasures of Japan. The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) is one of the world's largest wooden buildings. One of Japan's best-known temples, it enshrines a gigantic bronze statue of Buddha. A wonder of religious architecture.

The stroll thru Nara Deer Park to get to Todaji is beautiful. The first gate you come to has huge wooden statues that serve as Guardians to the temple and the Buddha inside.  The statues are truly works of art and are just mind blowing.  The huge Buddha statue inside is amazing and awe inspiring.  When you stand at its base, you will realize just how large the Buddha really is.

You truly can not appreciate the magnitude of the temple of Buddha at Nara until you are at its base and witness the magnitude of it .  It stands a total of 90 feet high, with the face alone, an amazing 15 feet !

The Buddha is made of gold and copper.

The grounds surrounding the temple are beautifully maintained.

You will also see over 1,000 tame deer roam freely in the verdant 1,250 acres peaceful park. If you wish to feed the deer, they will gladly eat from your hand. Special deer food is available for sale in the park grounds.

Tour concludes with a visit to Kasuga Shrine, the most famous and beautiful Shinto shrine in Nara, it features some 3,000 antique stone and bronze lanterns.

Nestled in the midst of verdant woods, Kasuga Taisha is approached via a long pathway intended to give the visitor time to prepare for worship. The natural setting is a purposeful part of the sacred site, since Shinto is rooted in nature. The main entrance to the shrine is through the Minamimon (South Gate) and past the Temizuya (water fountain and basin), where it is customary to wash your hands.

The shrine itself features vermilion-colored pillars and an astounding 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns. They were donated over the years by common people as tokens of faith and thankfulness,
